SOTHEBY’S BREAKS WORLD RECORD WITH SALE OF $46 MILLION PINK DIAMOND
Sotheby’s sold a rare 24.78-carat fancy intense pink diamond for US$46.16 million, breaking the world record for a jewel sold at auction.
“This is the highest price ever bid for a jewel at auction,” says David Bennett, the head of Sotheby’s jewelry division in Europe and the Middle East.
London jeweler Laurence Graff purchased the diamond, which had last hit the market 60 years ago when it was sold by New York jeweler Harry Winston to a private collection. Previously, the title of world record for a jewel sold at auction belonged to the 17th century “Wittelsbach” blue 35.56-carat diamond, which Graff purchased from Christie’s in 2008 for $24,311,190.
According to media reports, there were four active bidders for the pink diamond. The Geneval auction offered 550 lots in total, including items once belonging to Christina Onassis, daughter of Greek shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis, and Cristina Ford, the second wife to Henry Ford’s grandson, Henry Ford II, reports London’s DailyMail.
